Bummis also gave us official feedback about laundry detergent brands and detergent residue issues because they believe in passing on complete information so your cloth diapering experience can be as positive as possible.
Basic washing instructions
To keep stains from setting, either soak them or run a cold prewash cycle in your machine
Wash diapers in hot or warm water with less than the recommended amount of laundry detergent.
Dry in dryer or outside on a clothesline. Sunshine is a natural brightener and disinfectant!
Always was your new diapers a few times first to help them become fully absorbent
Smell your diapers and covers after they are washed! If they smell stinky or like detergent, wash them again with less detergent or more water.
Other easy tips
Don't use bleach or whitening agents. They will break down the fabric.
Don't use fabric softeners. They will leave residue on your diapers and covers and cause leaking.
Don't use laundry detergents that contain perfumes, dyes, chlorine bleach or stain guards.
Too much detergent in the wash can lead to irritated skin, smelly covers, and less absorbing diapers.
Diaper rash creams can stain your diapers and covers or leave a residue. Use them sparingly.
Wash with high water levels for better rinsing. Any detergent residue will affect performance!
Do unfold your diapers before soaking or washing to allow complete cleaning.
To remove residual detergent, occasionally add a 1/2 cup of vinegar to the first rinse. This deodorizes, sanitizes and brightens. Not in the final rinse, as this will have the opposite effect!
To shorten drying time, spin longer or add a dry towel to the dryer. Modern cloth diapers - maybe not what you're thinking!
